Today I picked up some more lumber from Windsor plywood before heading for home. Once I got home I started working on the lower leeboard support. I used the upper guard as a template for the curve of the hull. I clamped the blank to the upper leeboard guard against the fence that was still [...]

2/183 More Stem Work
Today after work I drove down to Lee Valley and picked up a big honking router bit..a straight template bit with cutters 1 1/2″ deep to trim the gunwales at the front and back using a template.
I also drove over to Windsor Plywood and picked up what should be enough lumber for me to finish [...]

13/180 (Hours) Gunwales & Glass
Once again, I can’t remember everything in order but I got the last gunwale on and after it had pretty much cured, I took out the temporary form. Left the clamps on for overnight just in case although everything seemed to be completely set up. Man, it feels great to reach that point!
I did have [...]

3/163 Odds n’ Ends
Today I mucked about on a few odds n’ ends. First, I picked up some Sitka Spruce at a good price. I had it jointed and planed. Unfortunately, that made a few defects become obvious that weren’t apparent beforehand. I think that when it went through the planer/jointer some weaknesses were turned into cracks. [...]

Long time no post! I have done quite a few things but can’t remember much of the exact days, etc. After filling the transom and working on the bottom a bit I was considering glassing the bottom and then using fairing compound to make it all pretty. I posted some questions to Duckworks forum on [...]

I put a another coat of epoxy onto the tape in the morning before going to work…this to fill the weave.
While at work, Patty called and asked if I was interested in taking the boys out of school and going up to Iroquois Lake where we bought a lot over the winter to build [...]

The Hardest Working Tool in Boatbuilding
10/90
There is no doubt that on my project it is my smallest hand plane, an old nondescript piece of metal that I inherited from my Dad and I suspect he got it from his Dad as well. I removed a ton of material with it today to make the bilge panels fit. The first panel [...]

Mostly sanding the last few days.
I cut some Douglas Fir to size for the transom framing and glued them to the transom using Titebond III. I figure I am going to tape and epoxy these joints so using Titebond shouldn’t hurt anything. It’s so much nicer to use it than epoxy. I have to [...]

Another warm, although windy, day and I got some more work done.
I rounded over and sanded the inside edges of all the remaining bulkheads. I don’t know if I’l ever notice that I did this but it just seemed like a good thing to do…and I’ve hardly ever used that big honking Porter Cable 7239 [...]

Saturday April 12, 2008 – Bunch of Firsts
Today was a glorious day…nice and sunny and warm. I decided to go ahead with some epoxy work. I figured that with the warmer weather I should have faster cure times and the epoxy should be easier to mix and work with.
First, I decided to laminate the cheek pieces for the rudder. I covered [...]
