I have read several books about small boat building, sailing, sails and so forth. Here is a list of books and websites I have found useful:
Chuck Leinweber’s duckworksmagazine.com Chuck’s great site on all aspects of small boat ownership. His sister site, Duckworks BBS (Boat Builder’s Supply) is where I bought my plans, hardware, epoxy, etc, etc. The best service you could ever ask for. Chuck and Sandra are boatbuilders and were unbelievably helpful.
Boatbuilding for Beginners (and Beyond) by Jim Michalak, the designer of Ladybug.
UltraSimple Boatbuilding by Gavin Atkin.
Build the New Instant Boats by Dynamite Payson
Devlin’s Boatbuilding: How to Build Any Boat the Stitch-and-Glue Way by Samual Devlin
The Complete Sailor: Learning the Art of Sailing by David Seidman
Jordan Wood Boats: Boatbuilding My Way by Warren Jordan
The Year of the Boat – Beauty, Imperfection and the Art of Doing It Yourself by Lawrence Cheek. A great book about building your first boat. Very funny and insightful…I relate a ton to this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
As I make this list I start thinking that if I’d spent less time reading and more time working on the boat I’d be half done by now. But, I think that time spent in learning about the process I am about to undertake is time well spent as it may save me time, aggravation and money in the long run. I have to say that I have enjoyed reading every book on that list and found them all to be helpful, informative and fun to read. As I am a complete neophyte in all aspects of boatbuilding, woodworking and sailing, I need all the help I can get.
